United Kingdom, Newcastle upon Tyne: Northern Powergrid has announced an £83 million ($118 million) programme to upgrade the North East’s electricity supply in the region and create a power system able to cope with green initiatives and integration of renewable energy.

Within the programme, which will run until 2023, the utility will upgrade more than 8,000 substations and create new data warehouses to process data from substations and from domestic smart meters, reports Chronicle Live.

Among the improvements that will be introduced are new transformer monitoring control units to be installed in 750 major substations and the equipment that allows them to control voltage.
